Viewing Northern Lights @ Black Spruce
Self Guide or Tour
Self-Guided Viewing
If you have a rental, it’s quite possible to go view auroras yourself. Here is how to do it:
Download an app and get alerts for the forecast! We recommend My Aurora App (Android) and (IOS). If the forecast is looking promising, here are the two places we recommend going that are away from the city lights:
This is just on the other side of the Yukon river, through a subdivision called Riverdale. and a great place for viewing auroras if they are out! You can stop anywhere alongside the road, or right to the end of the road, which ends at a lake.
2) Fish Lake
This is for the more adventurous – but please be careful on the road. There’s a lot of sharp corners, and many people go off the road because they go to fast! The road ends at the lake, where you can park, and can allow for incredible viewing of the lights.
Safe Driving in the Winter
Drive safely in winter conditions, and be prepared by wearing warm clothes and keeping your cellphone charged. A great tip is to wear your jacket even while driving. Be safe!
When there, if it’s not too cold, you can go for a walk, or just hang out in the car until they are out. We recommend podcasts, maybe a board game or something to keep yourself occupied while you wait!
Take A Tour
We offer tours through Northern Tales. The tours are a great way of been guided out to see the lights, and many people have great things to say about them! The tours depart from downtown in the evening, where you’ll be taken to a cozy place with hot drinks. The tours return at 2:30AM, so be prepared to sleep in the next day.
